Indian Dental Information

Idacochin.org exists to provide information about dental options available in India, and Cochin specifically. Questions you might have about what kinds of dental health programs are available in India and how they can be accessed should be answered in this site. Information about the IDA (Indian Dental Association), its philosophy and a brief history is also available for perusal here.

The India Dental Association became the Indian Dental Association (IDA) in 1946. IDA was formed to unite dental professionals and patients across India. This organization is meant to foster education, improve awareness and enhance communication.

The Cochin (Kochi) branch of the Indian Dental Association has been in existence since 1968. It was founded by Dr. M.K. James. At the time of its founding, it was called the Cochin Dental Society. However, eight years later it merged with the national organization, necessitating a name change.

The initial Cochin Dental Society was founded in an effort to update members on happenings in the dental community, and improve awareness and communication for citizens as to what kinds of dental help were available and how they could be accessed. These goals dovetailed nicely with the nationwide IDA, which led to the eventual merger.

Today, the IDA Cochin still exists to promote oral health to doctors and citizens alike by improving education and awareness, as well as advocating the need for oral hygiene and dental health.

Toward these ends, the IDA offers many continuing education programs throughout India to help improve the country’s dentistry. It also provides dental assistance for its citizens, including programs designed to reach parts of the country that don’t have easy access to dental care. Programs such as Susmithan focus on rural areas, while programs such as Ardra focus on dental care in orphanages.

Other programs established by the IDA include the Teachers Training Program (or TTP), as well as the Parents Orientation Program (or POP). The former is designed to provide more educational opportunities so that there will be more capable dentists throughout India down the road. The latter is meant to give parents information about where affordable (in many cases free) dental care is available in their area.

As one specific example of a program provided by the Cochin brand, IDA Cochin has been running a free dental clinic and oral cancer detection center for past 12 years. It is located at the corporation building, in the Dhanya junction at Chalikkavattom, Vytila. Generally hours run from 10 AM to 1 PM.

Idacochin.org aims to provide you with helpful information about all things relating to the IDA in general, and IDA Cochin specifically. Additionally, the site provides several helpful tips about basic care for gums and teeth. While much of the information herein is region-specific, these general tips are useful to people of all backgrounds in all parts of the world.
