Endodontics – this doctor deals with the tooth pulp and surrounding gum. If you have any sort of gum disease, you will need to see one of these specialists. The most common procedure performed in endodontics is a root canal.

Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology – this specialty deals with the nature, identification, and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions. It is a science that investigates the causes, processes and effects of these diseases. This specialty includes research, diagnosis of diseases using clinical, radiographic, microscopic, biochemical or other examinations, and in many instances the management of patients.

Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology – this specialty uses medical imaging technolgies to diagnose and treat diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery – these are the doctors who use surgery to correct problems in the oral and maxillofacial regions. A common procedure is complicated wisdom tooth extractions.

Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics - is concerned with the study and treatment of malocclusions (improper bites), which may be a result of tooth irregularity, disproportionate jaw relationships, or both. The word comes from the Greek words ortho meaning straight and odons meaning tooth.

Orthodontic treatment can focus on dental displacement only, or can deal with the control and modification of facial growth. In the latter case it is better defined as "dentofacial orthopedics".
